Tweet your pitch!

XpoNorth Writing & Publishing is offering writers across Scotland the chance to deliver on their creative resolutions for 2016 in just one tweet, with a Twitter pitch event on January 6.

On Wednesday, XpoNorth Writing & Publishing is opening its Twitter channels to pitches of unpublished fiction and nonfiction from writers living and working in Scotland.

Reading the tweets as they arrive will be a panel of agents and publishers, assembled in association with Jenny Brown Associates, literary agents of Edinburgh, and if they like what they read they’ll make contact with the writer with a view to potential representation or publishing.

All that writers have to do is to create a pitch for their unpublished work in 135 characters or less –  that’s the normal 140 character max for tweets minus the vital hashtags that must be included in the tweets to let us know the genre of the work.

Peter Urpeth, Director (Writing & Publishing) for Emergents / XPONorth, said: “For new and unpublished writers, life really is a pitch, and this twitter event gives writers the chance to start the New Year on a very positive and productive note.

"Pitching your work is always tough, but it is a skill that new writers must have in order to sell their work in an increasingly competitive and hard industry.

“The limited length of a tweet is also a good space in which to really get to the core elements of a story, and writers who can describe their work with that degree of discipline, and do so in an engaging way, are far more likely to be published than those who really don’t have a full grasp of their own stories, their intended readership, and a way to make their work visible in a very crowded market.

“I’d encourage any writer with a complete but unpublished draft work of fiction or nonfiction, for adults or children, to pitch their work, and to spend time practicing and sharpening their pitch tweet, and to head into the New Year on a productive note”.
