The Jacobite

The JacobiteA Magical Journey Through Time

Described as the greatest railway in the world, this 84 mile round-trip will take you on a breathtaking journey through time on one of the most stunning scenic railway journeys in the world.

Starting just 60 miles from Inverness in Fort William, this world renowned trip attracts tens of thousands of tourists from all over the globe every year.

It is set amidst towering mountains, meandering rivers and deep-water lochs; needless to say, its desolate and remote location stirs the senses. It is therefore no wonder that in recent years it has become a popular filming location, most notably for the Harry Potter franchise.

The Route

The journey starts under the magnificence of Ben Nevis and upon leaving Fort William you will shortly pass the village of Corpach. The train is then scheduled to stop at the village of Glenfinnan which lies just after the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a great example of Victorian workmanship completed in 1898.

Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig and Morar. By request to the guard you may choose to alight at Arisaig where from here, on a clear summer's day, you can see the "Small Isles" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on passing Morar, home to Britain's deepest freshwater loch and the silvery beaches used in the films Highlander and Local Hero.

Upon arrival in Mallaig you will have over an hour and a half to explore and take in the atmosphere of this bustling fishing port before returning to Fort William.

The JacobiteFollow in the footsteps of Harry, Ron and Hermione

The Hogwarts Express train that carried Harry, Ron and Hermione to school each year was filmed along the Fort William to Mallaig Jacobite route. The movies show the train chugging across the Glenfinnan Viaduct, where, in The Goblet of Fire, the Dementors stall the train and torture Harry. A train bridge opposite Loch Shiel near Fort William also popped up in the Chamber of Secrets and was used again when the Dementors boarded the train in The Prisoner of Azkaban.
