Event of the Week: For a soul legend

THEY will be dancing on Academy Street on Friday (December 9) when one of the true legends of soul, Martha Reeves, returns to the Highlands.

Raised in Motown itself, the city of Detroit, like her peers Aretha Franklin and so many more, this granddaughter of a preacher began her singing career in church and worked as a backing singer for Marvin Gaye before success under her own name with The Vandellas, including soul classics Dancing in the Street, Jimmy Mack and Nowhere to Run.

Still performing at the age of 75, despite taking a break for a few years to get involved in local politics in her native city, Reeves was a hit at last year’s Belladrum Festival and returns to the north this weekend with the latest incarnation of The Vandellas to perform at The Ironworks in Inverness.
