Event of the week: Folk heroes

Fairport Convention
Fairport Convention

ORIGINAL sources are often matters of great dispute, but when it comes to whowere the founders of British folk rock, most authorities are in agreement that  honour belongs to Fairport Convention.

In the almost half century since a bunch of music fans convened in a suburban house called Fairport – hence the name – quite a number of folk have popped in and out of the band, among them such important figures in the story of British folk music as Richard Thompson, the late Sandy Denny and Dave Swarbrick, but guitarist Simon Nicol has been a constant figure from the very start.

Completing the line-up which will appear at Eden Court on Sunday will be sometime Jethro Tull bass-player Dave Pegg, Chris Leslie on fiddle and mandolin, Ric Sanders on violin and Gerry Conway on drums – playing songs from one of the most impressive back catalogues in British popular music
