Event of the Week: Hairspray and hits

MAVERICK film director John Walters seems an unlikely inspiration for a mainstream musical hit if you know anything about his boundary smashing and subversive early independent movies.

Yet his good natured 1988 film Hairspray, set in 1960s Baltimore where brave teen Tracy Turnblad leads a revolt against rules about race and beauty, found new life as a Broadway hit, winning eight Tony Awards and running for over 2500 performances before spawning its own successful film version in turn with John Travolta well disguised – and upholstered – as Tracy’s mother Edna.

The stage version arrives at Eden Court on Monday with a star cast that includes Claire Sweeney, former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan, Benidorm’s Tony Mausdley as Edna and Freya Sutton as Tracy.

Hairspray runs at Eden Court until Saturday March 5.
