EDEN Court is about to usher in its own crime wave as the first offering from a new strand of cult movies,

The masterminds behind the Cult Classic movie season are Eden Court’s own cinema programmer Paul Taylor and local music promoter Steve Robertson, who have selected the first season of five films, beginning next Thursday with 1993 film True Romance.

"The idea was to show films that people could have a night out at and have a bit of fun — really enjoyable classic films that people have enjoyed for years that over time have picked up a cult following," Robertson explained.

"It’s something I wanted to do for years and took a stab at that at with free screenings at IG:LU on Church Street. Some of those were really well attended, but you can’t recreate the big screen experience and that’s something that Eden Court can do really well.

"But we also don’t want to just show the obvious ones. People have asked why we weren’t showing Goodfellas, for example, but I think Casino from the same team is the one people have probably seen less."

It also gives fans an opportunity for film fans, perhaps for the first time, to see these films as they were intended — on the big screen

"True Romance is one of my favourite films, if not my favourite, and I’ve never seen it on the big screen. With a lot of these, unless people saw them when they first came out, this will be their only chance to see them that way," Robertson said.

Adding to the experience of watching a film with a bunch of friends, the price of the ticket for the opening film will include beer and pizza and Robertson hopes the audience will stick around after the screening to chat about the movie and maybe suggest future films and themes once the initial series of crime films finishes in June.

"It could be anything — war, science-fiction, superhero, documentary — the world’s our oyster really," Robertson said.
