MONDAY will see the first in a set of seven sci fi film classics arriving at Eden Court Cinema – not in a spaceship, but courtesy of the British Film Institute season Days Of Fear And Wonder.
Included is a double bill of cult 50s B-Movies, The Man from Planet X and Devil Girl From Mars (Sunday, December 14) – both featuring Martians in Scotland, Devil Girl actually set in Inverness-shire.
It features a leather-clad woman from Mars sent to recruit men from Earth to replace the dying male population on her home planet. It’s mainly set in Inverness-shire and is a funny blend of local culture and the special effects of the day.
First up in the season is Seconds (Monday, 8.30pm), made in 1966 by director John Frankenheimer and starring Rock Hudson as a bored middle-aged man who agrees to be given a new identity by the sinister "Company".
There is a special selection of rarely-seen classics chosen by award-winning film-maker Ben Rivers, best-known for Two Years At Sea.
Rivers has revealed his life-long love of science fiction, and his selection includes Je T’aime, Je T’aime (Thursday, November 27, 8.15pm), a 60s French tale of love-torn memories thrown against the time-space continuum.
It’s one half of a double bill with La Jetee, seen as one of the most influential sci-fi films ever made. Made in 1962, the French film by Chris Marker is 28 minutes long and made up mostly of still photos to tell the story of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel. It won the Prix Jean Vigo for short film.
Sexmission (Saturday, November 29, 8.30pm) is a 80s Polish comedy in which two men are used as guinea pigs in an experiment which should see them placed in hibernation and brought back to life after three years. But when it goes wrong, they wake up 50 years later in a world poepled entirely by ... women!
There will also be a screening of The Tenth Victim (Thursday, December 4, a stylish 60s futuristic fantasy starring Marcello Mastroianni with Ursula Andress as a contestant in a televised game of legalised brutal murder.
