Alzheimer Scotland

Alzheimer ScotlandAlzheimer Scotland is Scotland's largest dementia charity.

With dementia being Scotland's biggest health and social care challenge, Alzheimer Scotland seeks to ensure nobody should face dementia alone and is working across communities to help raise vital funds to support dementia services.

Over 90,000 people are thought to live with the condition in Scotland and that figure is expected to double over the next 15 years or so. That figure does not include the countless partners, family members and friends also affected.

Alzheimer Scotland supports people to live as well as possible with a diagnosis of dementia in many ways, including the network of dementia advisors, therapeutic community activities such as dementia cafes, our 24-hour helpline, and the presence of dementia resource centres in our communities, bringing dementia to the high street. We also ensure dementia continues to be a priority with health and social care and that the voices of people with dementia and their carers are heard in decision making processes.

Fundraising is an integral part of the work we do. 2017 is an exciting year for fundraising as we introduce our very first Highland 'Ladies Lunch' in May in Achnagairn House, a spectacular venue. Following on the success of 'It's a Knockout' and the 'Memory Walks' in 2016, these are also planned for summer 2017.

Alzheimer Scotland also promotes dementia-friendly communities. This involves working with local communities, encouraging them to become dementia friends. Dementia friends come from all communities, organisations and businesses that are likely to come into contact with people living with dementia. Anyone can get involved.

A dementia friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action – from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media, every action counts.

We couldn't do any of the above without the support of volunteers. Volunteer roles range from supporting individuals within our day care service, our dementia resource centres or through volunteering for events.
