USUALLY seen catching out unwary contestants on ITV’s tea-time quiz, The Chase, The Sinnerman – aka Paul Sinha – is not immediately recognised as a comedian.
But his new show, Paul Sinha Is A Stand-up Comedian, is one of two productions lined up by Aberdeen Performing Arts for the Lemon Tree’s 2014 winter line-up.
Sinha will play the city centre venue on Sunday, December 7, on his UK tour, while award-winning comedian Alexis Dubus will take to the stage a few weeks earlier, on Friday, October 24.
Famed for his portrayal of Marcel Lucont, a French expert on love, Dubus is an alternative comedian and actor, a member of the sketch troupe Cat Of The Week, and host of the Falling Down With Laughter comedy club in London Bridge, which was voted London’s best small comedy club in the 2008 Chortle Awards.
His 2008 show at the Edinburgh Fringe won an award as one of the top 10 Fringe experiences, and he has appeared on Sky Atlantic’s Set List, BBC3’s Russell Howard’s Good News and Live At The Electric.
An English GP of Indian descent, and a less-than-successful contestant on Mastermind, The Brain of Britain, The Weakest Link and University Challenge – The Professionals, Sinha has been making his name in the world of stand-up comedy for more than a decade.
He began performing stand-up while working as a junior doctor in hospitals in London and King’s Lynn. In 1999, he was runner-up in the final of the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year.
After several years of combining touring with his medical career, his breakthrough came with his second solo Edinburgh show, Saint or Sinha?.
In 2013, he appeared in the Comedy Central UK show, The Alternative Comedy Experience, having performed at gigs all over the world and staged eight solo shows.
As well as being nominated for the highest accolade in live comedy at the Edinburgh Festival, Sinha has also been nominated for the breakthrough act, the best headliner and the best club comic (twice) by respected industry magazine, Chortle, winning the best club comic award in 2014.
He is best known, however, as a chaser in the ITV game show, which he joined in 2011.
Tickets for both shows are on sale now, by phone at 01224 641122, online at www.aberdeenperformingarts.com, and at Aberdeen Box Office at the Music Hall and His Majesty’s Theatre.
