A season of Scandinavian films adds a chill to Eden Court Cinema for the next two months, thanks to Inverness Film Fans’ latest choices.

Georgina Coburn, InFiFa’s chair, explained: "We decided to screen a season of award-winning and much acclaimed Scandinavian films that people may not have had a chance to see before, a bit of a dose of Nordic Noir in the height of the Scottish summer!

"I think fans of Borgen, The Killing and The Bridge will enjoy Jar City, adapted from Icelandic crime writer Arnaldur Indridason’s 2000 best-seller, Tainted Blood.

"Director Liv Ullman’s collaboration with legendary director Ingmar Bergman resulted in Faithless – a fantastic psychological drama and Oslo, is Joachim Trier’s film.

"It’s about a young man just out of rehab trying to reconnect with his old life and it’s touching and powerful."

First up is Norwegian film Oslo on Tuesday, at 7.15pm and the other two films are shown fortnightly after that at Eden Court Cinema, each followed by an informal discussion.

In Oslo, Anders, a young, recovering drug addict is on release from a rehabilitation centre to attend a job interview. As the day unfolds, he tries to reconnect with old friends and regain his life. Nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes in 2011 the film also bagged best director, cinematography, editing and best actor for Anders Danielsen Lie at the Norwegian Amanda Awards. It also stars Hans Olav Brenner and Ingrid Olava.

Faithless is shown on Tuesday, August 19 (7.15pm) and was written by veteran Swedish master director Ingmar Bergman, but directed by his one-time muse, Norwegian actress Liv Ullman and stars Lena Endre, Erland Josephson, Krister Henriksson.

Faithless is the story of Marianne, an actress married to a famous orchestra conductor and drawn to her husband’s best friend, with devastating consequences. Nominated for the Palme d’Or Award at Cannes in 2000, Faithless – it’s an InFiFa choice because of its "extraordinary central performances from Endre, Josephson and Henriksson".

The culmination of a long-term artistic collaboration between Ullman and Bergman, Faithless is a story of love, sex, marriage, betrayal and parenthood - and psychological tension. Jar City

And the final film of the group’s chilly season is atmospheric thriller Jar City, being shown on Tuesday, September 2.

Detective Inspector Erlendur steps out of Arnaldur Indridason’s 2000 bestseller Tainted Blood and onto the big screen "magnificently", according to InFiFa. As a murder in a small town becomes linked to a notorious unsolved case, long-held secrets are unearthed in an intriguing, plot-twisting story that will have you gripped until the very end. The 2006 film’s leading actors are Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir and Björn Hlynur Haraldsson.

Georgina said: "Set against a backdrop of haunting landscapes and with a commandingly subtle performance by Sigurðsson in the lead role, this is Nordic Noir at its best!"
