The Double
The Double - Jesse Eisenberg's split personalities

Release: 04/04/2014

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska

Synopsis: This latest directorial feature from Richard Ayoade sees Dostoevsky’s The Double portrayed in a surreal modern-day America. Starring Jesse Eisenberg as Simon, the narrative follows the life of a man who is under-confident and under-appreciated by all who surround him. One day a man called James shows up and Simon’s life turned upside down – James is the exact double of Simon in every way physical way possible, except he is confident, womanising and charismatic; everything Simon is not.

Why You Should See It: The acclaim that Richard Ayoade enjoyed for his directorial debut – Submarine – felt like the crescendo of a career that has steadily been building over the last decade. From his acting roles in The I.T. Crowd and the absolutely peerless Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (if you haven't seen it yet, we can't be friends), he's steadily built up his reputation as somebody to watch – and his debut behind the camera showed he can be equally talented on the other side of the cinematic equation.

This, as his second film, received a great amount of acclaim at the Toronto Film Festival – and with good reason. Eisenberg is reportedly brilliant in his dual role as two identical men, one almost masochistically shy and insular, and one almost sadistically confident and outgoing. He sells the conflict between the two characters brilliantly.
