Disability Snowsport UK

Disability Snowsport UKOur vision is that skiers and snowboarders with a disability should be able to ski alongside the able-bodied as equals at all ski facilities and resorts.

Our mission is to promote equality and opportunity for people with disabilities to take part in snowsports and to help improve their enjoyment and standard of performance at the level of their choice.

Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK) is a nationwide registered charity providing access to snowsports for those with disabilities. We provide therapeutic, life-enhancing and exciting activities for individuals or groups who require adaptive equipment and specialist instruction. Our work takes many forms, some of which include:

• Dedicated adaptive snowsports schools.
• Organised overseas activity weeks.
• School and youth programmes.
• Thirteen local groups operating regularly across the UK.
• Provision of training for specialist instructors and volunteers.
• An elite programme in the form of British ParaSnowsport (BPS) through which we identify talented athletes who have the potential to compete in the Paralympic Games.

For 40 years, DSUK have provided opportunities to those with disabilities to take part in skiing and snowboarding. We cater for all disabilities and all age groups.

Disability Snowsport UKThroughout the country we have local groups run by volunteers and we also have adaptive instruction at the Cairngorm Mountain and the Central Belt in Scotland, plus Hemel Hempstead, Manchester and Tamworth. At all of these locations we run a purpose-built adaptive snowsports centre providing individual and group lessons every day of the year. Not only do we cater for adults, but we run a schools and youth programme within which we can provide individual lessons or a series of instruction for a full week.

We are a small charity with a huge remit. Despite limited funds, our British ParaSnowsport athletes achieved outstanding success at the Sochi Paralympic Games in 2014. This attracted some UK Sport funding for our athletes, but we are struggling to fund our grassroots activities. These are crucial not only for talent spotting the next Paralympic hopefuls, but also, and most importantly, they provide life changing experiences for those with disabilities.

We are determined that the adaptive snowsports experience shall be a route towards acceptance, thus we are continually striving to break down barriers, including funding, which may stop people from enjoying the physical and mental benefits of snowsports.
