CARRBRIDGE songwriter Rachel Sermanni will open this year’s Perthshire Amber Festival in October.

Founded and curated by singer Dougie MacLean and his family, the festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a line-up which includes Eddi Reader, Emily Smith, Tom Spiers, Canadian acts The Paperboys and Buddy MacDonald, and Nashville singer Eliza Lynn.

Other Highland acts taking part include Kirkhill fiddler Duncan Chisholm, who will play at historic Dunkeld Cathedral on Thursday 30th October, and BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners the Mischa McPherson Trio from Ross-shire.

Rachel Sermanni will join MacLean at Fornab Castle near Pitlochry on the festival opening night, Friday 24th October.

This will be a second Perthshire festival this year for Sermanni, who can also be seen in the Northern Roots Festival at Eden Court in Inverness at the end of May.

She has also been announced for the fifth Solas Festival at Blackruthven over the weekend of 20th to 22nd June as part of a line up that includes Stanley Odd. King Creosote, R.M. Hubbert, Randolph’s Leap, poet Liz Lochhead and comedians Robin Ince and Josie Long.

This year’s Perthshire Amber is expected to reach an audience of 10,000 during the ten day programme, and includes a Homecoming 2014 Heritage Day in Dunkeld with historical re-enactments, food and drink, traditional children’s games, storytelling and live music.

"We can’t quite believe it’s been ten years since we started Perthshire Amber and from small beginnings we are proud that it’s grown to be so popular," Dougie MacLean said.

"The thing that really sums up what’s great about the festival is that increasing numbers of people return year on year from all over the world and so it’s like catching up with old friends. There’s plenty to celebrate and I’m really looking forward to the festival already."

Tickets for Perthshire Amber 2014 go on sale at 4pm on Tuesday 13th May.
