Discover our fascinating distillery
In 1826, at the height of the herring boom in Wick, James Henderson founded the Pulteney Distillery, when the town was only accessible by sea.
Many of the original distillery workers were also herring fishermen. At the time Wick was the busiest fishing port in Europe, with more than 1,000 boats in the harbour.
Nearly two centuries later the Pulteney Distillery continues to make malt whisky using traditional methods and ingredients. Take the distillery tour and find out much more.
Discover the unique taste
One of the most northerly distilleries on the British mainland, Pulteney Distillery is a very unusual malt whisky distillery.
The wash still has no 'swan neck', and it is thought that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the stillhouse and the manager simply cut the top of the still off.
Traditional craftsmanship and the distillery's windswept location all contribute to an award-winning, 'unashamedly excellent' whisky with a mineral-salted spiciness that evokes the rugged coastal landscape of the far north.
Try a complementary dram when you take a tour and discover the taste for yourself.
Discover your own whisky
Visitors can purchase their own hand filled bottle from our cask selection.
This precious cargo is then wax sealed and individually packaged in a canvas sack.
Finally, we add the visitor's name to our beautifully bound leather book to mark, for all time, the day they became a master bottler.
