A tiny loch-side hamlet, a backdrop of rugged crags and cliffs, a glittering loch with a horseshoe bay and a jaunty little pier and acres of the wild west to explore – it is quite simply one of those spots which make any visit to Scotland so worthwhile.
The road to (and from) Lower Diabaig from Torridon is a winding climb through moors and lochans, passing above and around the villages of Wester and Inver Alligin, before climbing steeply dramatically inland. Here you will cross the Bealach na Gaoithe ('pass of the winds') with incredible views over Upper Loch Torridon towards Ben Damph and Coulin Forests.
The road then curves down to Upper Diabaig and finally into Lower Diabaig itself. A journey worth taking for its own sake, but there is another reason to visit this special place.
Just over 3 years ago the neglected old schoolhouse in Diabaig was transformed into the Gille Brighde Café & Restaurant. Handcrafted and recycled renovation have given a rustic, gentle charm; scraps of the old shipwreck's deck that lies on the shore are built into the bar, driftwood shelves with quirky knick-knacks and a wood burner to warm hike-weary bones complete the welcome.
We source locally and believe in sustainability. Small independent producers, suppliers and service providers that share the vision of high quality, small-scale are people we like to work with. We source as much as possible from our doorstep and the majority from Scotland at least. Sadly we cannot find lemons or olives that grow here (yet!) but when further afield we still apply the basics' independent, cared for, careful and we use Scottish wholesalers.
Fresh meats, fish and seafood are prepared with care and set upon sauces and sides that creatively compliment or are reassuringly familiar but always beautifully presented. Non-meat dishes are treated with the same love and care. Why not?
We have a passion for sharing the simple pleasures of great food and drink, genial atmosphere and ambience and the special "can't quite put my finger on it" magic of this wee place.
We can't really take credit for the immense beauty that sits outside our front door...
