The Royal Hotel, Elgin

The Royal Hotel proudly proclaims that it sets the standards that others aspire to. This is no idle boast, as it is one of the best hotels in the north of Scotland, with a reputation that is second to none.

The building itself – Dalehapple House – was built in 1865 by James Grant, one of Elgin's most prominent Victorian citizens, and one of the founders of the Glen Grant Distillery in Rothes.

The hotel has 18 rooms, all fully en-suite and all well furnished and decorated, with eight of them being in the Annex, built in 1997.

The spacious 50 cover restaurant serves beautiful and varied food, made from only the finest and freshest of local produce wherever possible.

The comfortable cosy lounge bar carries a large selection of beers, wine, liqueurs and spirits, including single malts. This is the perfect place to have that pre-dinner drink in front of the marble fireplace, or enjoy a bar supper. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the place has a lovely relaxed, unstuffy, informal atmosphere that is sure to add to your enjoyment.

The historic city of Elgin itself is well worth exploring. The ruins of Elgin Cathedral – one of the biggest in Scotland – have to be visited, as do the many quaint shops on the High Street, and the Speyside Whisky Trail is close at hand, so The Royal Hotel, with superb food and drink, makes the ideal base for exploring the many distilleries in Strathspey.
