Special Strathpeffer event involves top musicians

By Margaret Chrystall

Fèis Rois is offering musicians young and old the chance to take part in master class level tuition from musicians including Innes Watson – and some of Scotland’s other most renowned folk, classical and jazz musicians – in Strathpeffer Pavilion next Saturday and Sunday (June 22 and 23).

Anyone playing strings, guitar or percussion to an intermediate or advanced level is welcome to take part.

The public is also invited to a concert of Innes Watson’s Guitar Colloquium on the Sunday evening, tickets available in advance or on the door.

Innes's Guitar Colloquium – which has come from an exciting project which grew from his New Voices commission for Celtic Connections in 2011.

Innes presents the guitar as the leading architect of contemporary traditional music with a string section comprising Seonaid Aitken, Patsy Reid and Alice Allen and Alyn Cosker and Duncan Lyall on drums and bass.

As a key member of the ground-breaking Treacherous Orchestra and accompanist to leading singers and instrumentalists, including Highland fiddle player, Duncan Chisholm, Innes has been at the forefront of tradition-based music’s development in Scotland over the past decade and expertly steers a group including fellow guitarists Ali Hutton (rhythm) and Chas McKenzie and Barry Reid on acoustics and electrics through his music’s varied contours.

These nine virtuoso musicians will offer local musicians the opportunity to workshop the music from Innes’s Guitar Colloquium project in Strathpeffer from 10am-4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Anyone playing strings, guitar or percussion to an intermediate or advanced level is welcome to take part.

Fèis Rois chief executive, Fiona Dalgetty said: ‘We are delighted to be bringing Innes Watson’s Guitar Colloquium to Ross-Shire. This is a unique opportunity for musicians from different backgrounds to come together to learn from some of Scotland’s finest exponents of traditional, classical and jazz music. As well as being phenomenal performers, these artists are also experienced tutors who are often invited to teach at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the University of the Highlands and Islands, and international events.”

To book a place on the workshops, which are free of charge, email Fiona.dalgetty@feisrois.org

Tickets to the concert, Guitar Colloquium, at Strathpeffer Pavilion at 7.30pm on Sunday 23rd June cost £10 full price and £5 concession and are available in advance from Fèis Rois on 01349 86 2600 or on the door on the night.
